The Ladies’ Running Club was the brainchild of a group of ordinary females who decided it was high time that women joined their male counterparts and took up this sport which up to then was completely dominated by men.
They formed a club in March 1988 and called it ‘LADIES’ RUNNING CLUB’. The motto of this club was RUN FOR FUN.
The first committee of the Ladies’ Running Club was formed by:
The first full marathon in which females took part, was held in 1987, and soon after the club was set up, the first member of the Ladies’ Running Club who completed this race was Cettina Caruana.
Also in 1987, the Half Marathon was introduced only to females, as men were expected to run the Full Marathon, and since then, the Ladies’ Running Club has gone from strength to strength with a good number taking part every year.
In 1991, the Ladies’ Running Club decided to organise its own club race. Thus the first LRC 6 mile race, which was held in September, and which was not sponsored, started and finished in the parking area of the Hotel Corinthia.
For the following couple of years, the race was sponsored by MOTTA
IceCream, and since the year 1994 when Mdina Glass became the main sponsors, the start and finish of the race were moved to the premises of the Mdina Glass factory.
In 1996 a Fun Run was added along with the main race, but this had to be done away with in 2004 due to traffic reasons.
Over the first few years, membership to the Ladies’ Running Club increased rapidly, but with interest growing considerably, other clubs started taking in women members, so membership was scattered among the many clubs sprouting up.
